	In 1850, Wells and Fargo created a merger with John Butterfield, the founder of a large and successful stage line, to form the American Express Company. For Years, this express line operated from coast to coast. Before 1929 another merger of American Express, Wells Fargo, Adams and Southern Express resulted in the American Railway Express Company. After 1929 this company changed it's name to Railway Express Agency. The badge was worn by any number of "Special Agents," whose job was to ensure teh safe delivery of all goods shipped through the agency. It was also their duty to protect all shipments from theft and robbery. The antique silver finish of these badges makes no two badges identical.
